Frequently Asked Questions
If you have any additional questions, please reach out to us at reslife@umd.edu or (301) 314-2100.
It depends on your program.
Each Living-Learning Program (LLP) has different rules about roommates. Your LLP will decide if your roommate needs to be part of the program.
While you may be able to choose a roommate who isn’t in your program, we prioritize making sure all program participants have space first. This means non-program roommate requests might not always be possible. For all non-program roommate requests, the LLP student should email Resident Life and include both students’ full names and University ID numbers.
Your roommate needs an active Fall 2024 housing application to be visible in Roommate Finder. Students must also be of the same gender and Living-Learning Program, if applicable. If you can't locate your intended roommate, please contact the Assignments office at reslife@umd.edu or call (301) 314-2100.
Using the Roommate Finder tool, you can see students who closely match your profile. Reach out to potential roommates to learn more about them.
Don't worry if you don't request a roommate before assignments are made. Often, students who didn't know each other before and are randomly assigned can become great roommates and lifelong friends.
Check out our Roommate Relationship stories on our YouTube channel for more information.
We accept requests for substance-free housing, limited visitation in Cecil Hall, and proximity to Maryland Hillel. To make one of these requests, update your housing preferences through the Housing Portal.
If you're looking for housing accommodations, please submit a request through Accessibility and Disability Service.
We will release residence hall assignments for Fall 2024 starting on July 18, 2024.
You will receive an email notifying you that your housing assignment is available for viewing in the Housing Portal.
We make first-year assignments based on the date you submit your Residence Hall Housing and Dining Agreement (the earlier you apply, the better!) and available vacancies.
If you're in a Living-Learning Program (LLP), you'll be assigned to the residence hall that houses your program area. Explore our residence hall community pages to learn where LLPs are located on campus.
If your plans have changed and you no longer need housing, please email reslife@umd.edu with your full name and University ID to cancel your housing agreement. Please submit this request before July 1 to avoid late fees.
You will incur a late fee if you cancel your housing agreement after July 1 and no longer plan to attend the university.
If you cancel your housing agreement after July 1 but still plan on attending the university, you will need to buyout your Housing Agreement.
Please review our Terms and Conditions page for more information on late fees and agreement buyout.
