Roommate Finder & Request Process

Roommate Finder & Request Process

The Roommate Finder and Roommate Request process for the 2022-2023 academic year begins Monday, June 6 at 9:00 a.m. through Friday, June 24, at 4:00 p.m.

Roommate Finder is an online roommate matching process that's integrated into our Residence Hall Housing and Dining Agreement. The questionnaires completed in the Residence Hall Housing Agreement will help students find potential roommate matches in the system if they want to request their own roommate or will help Resident Life staff match roommates together. Students may view or update the questionnaire responses in the Housing Portal under Profile.

There are many Terps who choose to be randomly assigned a roommate. It’s ok to not have a preferred roommate in mind! There are countless success stories of randomly assigned roommates who have comfortably shared their room and in many cases have become lifelong friends!

We strive to accommodate mutual roommate requests; however, we cannot guarantee all requests as there may be space limitations. Every request is considered on a case by case basis, and a number of factors are considered, including participation in Living-Learning Programs and the Residence Hall Housing and Dining Agreement submission date.

We will do our best to accommodate requests.

Forming Rommate Groups

These are the steps students need to take to invite and accept each other as a requested roommate pair.

  • A student can search by profile questions, for example, neatness.
  • You must complete at least one profile question.
  • Students can see suggestions by match percentage. This is based on your compatibility based on the profile questions you and other students have answered. Please know that no one will be a 100% match, and it is more important that you have a conversation with a potential roommate instead of letting a number determine your compatibility.
  • Within the results, you can view someone’s profile, which will also show if they are in a living-learning program (LLP). We are not able to guarantee that students whose LLPs do not match will be able to live together.
  • You can send a message to anyone on your list.
  • To add them to your group, send an invitation by selecting “Add to Group”.

  • The Group Leader, who is the first person to communicate with the other, can click on “Search for Roommates by UID” to create a group and add a member.
  • A Group Name will be created with the first invite.
  • Max group size is 3.
  • Group Leaders can add or remove a member.
  • Group Leaders can appoint someone else to be the group leader.

  • Must accept the invitation within 2 days.
  • Must have an active Fall 2021 application.
  • When the group leader has finished creating the group, all members will be able to view the pair. The group leader will be able to make edits to the group up until the deadline of 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 24.

Students Who Dont Want to Request a Roommate
There are many Terps who choose to be randomly assigned a roommate. It’s ok to not have a preferred roommate in mind! There are countless success stories of randomly assigned roommates who have comfortably shared their room and in many cases have become lifelong friends!

If you would rather be assigned randomly, our staff will do our best to pair you based on your responses to the living preferences questions on your Housing Agreement.

FAQs about Roommate Finder Process

No. Whether a student submits the request on June 6 or on the last day of June 24, we will not be processing these requests until after the deadline.

Yes and no. Residential requirements vary by living-learning program, so your program will decide if your roommate must also be part of the program. While you can select a roommate that is not in your living-learning program, space considerations will take priority as we must ensure that all living-learning program participants can be accommodated before allowing non-program roommate requests.

Room assignments will be released beginning July 18.

For Fall 2022, the maximum group size is 3. This means each student not assigned to a single room will have, at most, one roommate. For groups, you will be assigned to a triple room if one is available.

Students must have an active housing application for the Fall 2022 semester to be visible during the Roommate Finder process. If you cannot locate your intended roommate, that person should contact the Assignments office at reslife@umd.edu as soon as possible.

You will be able to see students who closely match your profile. We would recommend reaching out to those students to learn more about their potential as a roommate. In addition, we typically find that students who do not know each other before coming to campus can make the best roommates.

Don’t be afraid of living with someone new- you may soon find you have many things in common, and you may learn so much from the experience!

There are many success stories of randomly assigned roommates who had great experiences and in some cases have become lifelong friends. View our Roommate Relationship stories on our Youtube channel.
