Room Surface Disinfection
During Winter Break

Winter Break In-Room Surface Disinfection

In support of the university’s broader efforts to prevent the spread of cold, flu, and other viruses, including adenovirus, on campus, Residential Facilities will expand the standard Winter Break residence hall cleaning program beyond our typical cleaning practices to include disinfecting frequently-touched surfaces inside student rooms.

What will be included in the process
  • Hired contractors, escorted by University staff, will disinfect frequently-touched surfaces inside residence hall rooms, suites, and apartments from January 7-18, 2019.
  • Frequently touched surfaces include things like doorknobs, desk/dresser tops, and drawer fronts, countertops, light switches, faucets, and bed frames. The list of items that will be disinfected are listed in the frequently asked questions document (linked below). Cleaning of all in-room/suite/apartment bathrooms will include toilets, showers, sinks, and bathroom floors.

Please take the following actions prior to departing for Winter Break
  • In bedrooms: Clear off the tops of desks and dressers, clear off window sills, and desk chairs, move bedding and pillows away from headboards and footboards, and remove towels from closet door handles.
  • In kitchens and living rooms: Clear off countertops, dining tables, and chairs.
  • In-room/suite/apartment bathrooms: Clear off vanities/countertops, remove personal items from showers, remove any bath mats or rugs, and secure any medications.
  • Take valuables home with you over break and store fragile items out of the way.

It is important that you prepare your space before leaving for the break. Staff will NOT move nor disinfect personal belongings, so contractors will not be able to fully disinfect surfaces that are covered with personal belongings. Plastic bags will be available at residence hall service desks if you need them to consolidate your belongings.
