Joe's Life

Joe is remembered with joy by his friends and colleagues. We remember him for his passion for life and kinship, his love of family and friends, his ever-present wit and tireless good cheer, and the depth of his personal commitment to caring for countless others, including strangers and the disadvantaged in our society. "Joe lived life with a freedom, a joy and a passion that was rivaled only by his ability to care and to love," recalls friend and colleague Walter Mills. "To be called 'friend' by him was a cherished gift, and I will miss my friend each and every day." Another friend and colleague Dai-An Tran reminds us that "Joe's positive outlook and approach on life not only inspires us, but has provided countless opportunities for growth, learning and lifelong experiences for many who became a part of the family he created at Maryland. I am grateful to have worked for him, but am more honored to have been his friend."

Joe is survived by his parents Margaret and Joe, his sister Deb and his brother Greg, five nieces and nephews, many aunts, uncles and cousins, and dear friends Ann Posa, Glenda Lassiter and Mario Payne.

Among his many friends, Joe was particularly close friends with the Rev. William Byrne, Chaplain of the Catholic Student Center at the University of Maryland .

A memorial service celebrating Joe's life and his nearly 17 years of service in our Resident Life department was held July 15, 2005 in the Memorial Chapel. A reception followed at the Catholic Student Center.
